The sedentary lifestyle and excess calorie intake in modern lifestyle are the causes for weight gain and subsequent health problems. The modern ways of weight loss are not healthy and the skin sags after the weight loss is another worry towards looks. In such cases yoga is a better option for weight loss. It is healthy way to loose weight and tone the muscles uniformly. Yoga asanas are the postures to increase metabolism, burn calories, reduce stress and relax body and mind.

Yoga works towards achieving physical and mental piece. Yoga also presents benefits like stronger and flexible body, toned muscles, stress reduction and improved sense of physical and mental well being making one feel better. One can start and practice yoga at any age. Pranayama (breathing exercise), meditation and relaxation and naturopathic treatments are the branches of yoga. Yoga is a lifestyle rather than only an exercise technique.

Conventional yoga is for relaxing. Yoga builds strength but does not provide the cardiovascular exercise required for weight loss. Yoga can be combined with running, walking or aerobic exercise to burn calories to be used as weight loosing program. A modification of ancient yoga with modern fitness exercise can bring about weight loss.

Astanqa, power yoga and hot yoga are the types of yogas recommended for weight loss purpose. Astanqa yoga and power yoga involve vigorous cardiovascular exercises. Astanqa yogs after learning it can be done at home. Power yoga is a term used to describe the modified asanas. This is an active and athletic style of traditional yogaasanas. Though it is athletic style of yoga it may not be easy for atheletes, they need to start slowly. The modifications are done keeping in view the fitness aspect.

Hot yoga is vinyasa yoga done in hot room (temperature about 32oC) which causes sweating which brings down weight.
Kunjal kriya (wahing stomach and cleansing lungs), Basti (cleansing of colon), Laghu Shankha Prakshalan (a technique for cleansing of digestive system), Baghi (tiger exercise) and Yog asanas (postures) are the yogic ways to reduce weight.

Yoga is not suitable for quicker weight loss but it is helpful in slimmer and toned body in long run.
