Getting rid of a cold...

What do you do?

I have had my cold for a week now, but I don't want to suppress it by taking over-the-counter meds. I heard it was better to let it work itself out of your system. Apparently it's better then taking all the drugs...but I am sick of having the cold and I want it to go away faster! Any tips?

Right now I am taking 2000 mg of Vitamin C everyday...
I have been drinking lots of water
I have been going to bed earlier and getting 8-10 hours sleep
I have used the Vic's vapour rub on my throat & chest
have also had a few cough drops...I try to limit them

I am thinking about caving and taking Buckley's, it's always worked for me in the past...

or does anyone else have any more natural methods to fend off colds? a specific tea maybe? or something else? are there any specific bath salts I can use that has an aroma to breathe in?

Hi Missy,
You never said where your cold was located. Is it a stuffy head? Or is it in your chest? I agree that meds arent always the best way to go, however dont wait too long or your friendly neighborhood head cold will turn into my favorite disease...Bronchitis. Try Sudafed shower tablets. I think that is who makes them. At least you will get your sense of smell back for a while. They smell mediciney, but it is oddly relaxing. Or the stuff you put into boiling water and drink. Avoid milk! And if you do take a cough medication, make sure it has an expectorant. That will help your coughs be more "productive." In other words, it helps evict the mucus from your throat. Just when you think it is gone, there is always more. Keep pumping those fluids and get your rest like you have been doing. Try not to exercise, but if you do....go easy on yourself. My favorite decongestant of choice is Vicks 44 D (Blue Box). Hope you feel better soon!

~Carrie

ahh sorry, I forgot to mention it, thanks Carrie!

I have a cough and sinus problems. My cough used to be worse..it was like a hacking cough that hurt before, only now the hurt has gone away.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I haven't worked out in a week...it feels weird not to.

I have feeling the cold also. I have had it for a little over a week - my daughter gave it to me but she is feeling better now...little stinker. I can't seem to get rid of the mucus - coming from blowing my nose and coughing. Just when I think I am done blowing my nose I am right back doing it again and more stuff coming out...it doesn't stop. My cough used to hurt really bad, too...now it is just annoying. I had taken some medicine but none of it helped...urgh! I am no longer taking any medicine - just letting it ride out. I have let up on my workouts - have been doing leisure walks instead of my power walks and have still been drinking lots of water. It's going away slowly - it's just too slow.

I hope you start feeling better.
