A sweet little story...

Today when I was talking with my trainer he got talking about the changes he's made in his daughter's school. He is an active parent and gets himself involved. He had all of their vending machines removed from the school and had them replaced with machines that only sell water, flavoured water etc...there is also a machine that offers fresh fruit! How awesome is he?

Apparently his daughter only gets gym twice a week and he offered to volunteer his time FOR FREE to provide the children with more physical education. They refused it because he's not in the union...blah blah blah...I think it was great of him to offer though.

He also said he goes to all her school plays etc...and he is the only father who goes out of his way to show his daughter he is proud of her. He told me he gets her flowers everytime she has some kind of performance going on at her school.

I just felt like posting this because I am always inspired by people who take the time to help others and make them feel good.

Awwww, that is really sweet. I wish more Father's could be that way with their kids. I know there's a lot of good ones out there, my kids didn't get so lucky though.

Wow Missy...

Not only does he look good, but he has a good heart. (He is definitely earning his yummy points in my book!) I cant believe the school would pass up such an opportunity. There seems to be some strict boundaries when it comes to unions. My current employer isnt too happy because a union was voted in and they wont be able to get away with running things the way they have. But I digress...Why cant they look into making him a volunteer parent (teacher's aid) or even a "substitute teacher." He's got the credientials for gosh sakes. Maybe they are worried about compensation, or liability. Who knows. If I were the principal I would have taken him up on the offer. All you have to do these days and look at the growing obesity epidemic. Unfortunatly, you dont have to look too far. Parents can feed their kids good things, but schools can offset that completely with their poor offerings, and lack of gym time. Sitting in the classroom may stimulate brain development, creativity, and knowledge, but it does nothing for the muscles, or teach how to be a team player. Bad move on the school's part. They could have at least researched it. How many parents can lead such crazy busy lives and still find time to take that much interest in their child's life and welfare? I dare say, not many. He should give some thought to an after school fitness program for kids. Then the school doesnt have a leg to stand on if it isnt held on school property. (If he has the time.)
Wow, healthy vending machines! They tried to do that at work, but the selections are still dismal. I have a hard time choosing something in there when it is surrounded by cheeseburgers, pies, salads with junk on them, subs, and other unhealthy selections. But, when push comes to shove, I have fallen victim to it. I start carrying spoons so I dont have an excuse not to pick the yogurt or fruit cups. I am just going to avoid the mechanical food monster altogether. Take that!!

Missy,

Thanks for sharing that. That is so sweet. What a very lucky girl his daughter is...in many ways. There is a girl that I'll bet will grow up with very good, healthy self esteem too. Very touching.

That is sweet. And nice to hear.
I get so fed up with the school system sometimes --- I think their union limits them. "We can't do this, or we can't do that" because of protocol, proper procedures, etc....
Sometimes in the midst of all the 'proper procedures' you lose plain old common sense.
I know my kids have had special programs where they ask parents and others to volunteer to teach the kids something in their area of expertise. We've had needlepoint, karate, and dancing, just to name a few. They certainly could have found some way, even if only for a few special classes for someone who is willing to share what they know with the kids! Kids absorb a lot-- and who knows --even if just one kid got the message and started to lead a healthier lifestyle-- wouldn't it have been worth it?
I love that he gives his daughter flowers for special events. That is way over-done here though. It's not special anymore. It's more of a competition --- whoever gets their daughter the biggest, and most extravagant bouquet are the one's whose daughter is the most special! Ugh -- turning what started to be a genuinely sweet gesture into a big, showy nuisance!
And it just makes these girls think they deserve flowers and pampering for everything! Just wait till they're old enough for prom. I have a friend who's going through this with her daughter. Special dress, of course. Special underwear for dress-- probably necessary-- hair done-- practice--- hair done for real... manicure... pedicure... get makeup done ( oh no -- can't do it yourself!!) after prom outfit. ... after prom underwear ( no, i'm not kidding)... not to mention shoes!
I wonder what they are going to do when they get married to pamper themselves and feel special!
Sorry -- I really went off didn't I. And it sounds like I'm being critical, and I don't mean to be. It seems your trainer absolutely adores his daughter, and that's wonderful. They say that is the best thing for a dad to do. He should take her out on little 'dates' too. Maybe not yet, but when she's a little older. I have heard this is great because it teaches girls the way they should be treated when out on a date. It should set some pretty high standards for her, when she does start dating.... like when she's 30, or 40 maybe (I have a 10 year old daughter too -- not sure I'm ever letting her out of the house!!! )

Thank you muppet. I will be sure to mention the little dates thing to him. I'm sure he'd be happy to do it.

He took her to see Hilary Duff when she was here...just the 2 of them...it must have been funny to see this wrestler dude at a Hilary Duff concert!

Wow -- he is a sweetie! What a sacrifice on his part.
You know those girls--sometimes a friend, sometimes just an acquaintance, who go out with these guys, and you just wonder, what is she thinking? Or ... what is she doing with that jerk??? And I'm sure you've all seen these guys, who are so nasty, and treat their girlfriends like crap -- and yet they always seem to have a girlfriend, and the girlfriends seem desperate to hang on to him. It's like they can't see that he is a loser, or they don't think they could, or deserve any better...
I wonder how some women get this way. I suppose part comes from how they were raised. Part from pop culture, which says you are only beautiful if you look a certain way...
I just think anything you can do to counteract this... anything you can do to make a girl feel beautiful and special.. is worth doing. We all deserve to be loved and adored. No one should think they have to settle for anything less than that.
Ok -- I'm climbing off my soap box.
