Giving up soda

I would like to give up my diet coke. I drink about 3-4 a day. I know its bad for me. I am addicted to it and sometimes it is the only alternative in social situations. Any ideas

My carbonated water from Aldi's has been my only solution to this. I've still got the carbonation, but not all of the rest of the junk that comes in pop. I like it because it's clear (thinking maybe it won't be as hard on my kidneys), but what do I know? I'm not a doctor!

Talking

I had a huge diet pepsi addiction. There were others too. I knew it was stalling my weight loss so I gave it up cold turkey. I now drink water or decaf iced tea. I have been drinking some juice too, but the cals are a little high and I need to get back on track. I suggest slowly decreasing your intake week by week. Lose a can each week. Then scale down to the 1/2 cans. Before you know it, you will be soda free. This Tuesday is my 4 week no soda or tv dinner anniversary. Treat it like a contest and see how long you can keep it up. If you slip. One soda wont blow your diet, but go caffeine free. Best of luck.

I'm a little afraid to ask this, because I love my pop, and don't want to give it up. But why is diet soda so bad for you? I realize if you drink it by the gallon, it can't be good for you, but is 1 or 2 cans a day really so bad? Does it sabotage your weight loss?
I'm not trying to say it's harmless. But I have noticed several people saying they have given it up, and am wondering why.
Is Crystal Light also bad for you?
I can understand too, that these things are bad for you, if you are drinking them in place of water. But I would think they would be ok, in moderation, as long as you are drinking water, and other healthy drinks.

Personally I have a HUGE regular Pepsi addiction - not a good thing!! So I feel your pain
muppet: I can't answer your question on why diet pop is bad - cause I don't know.

wintolose06 and muppet and anyone else with diet pop addiction: If you don't want to give it up and it doesn't affect your weightloss... (this is just my opinion) then don't give it up. What I would do is make a deal with yourself that you have to drink all of your water for the day BEFORE you can have a soda.
And for those you, like me, who drink the regular stuff instead of diet... I would switch to water and skip the whole trying to get use to the taste of diet (yuck!)

Muppet,

I'm not necessarily giving up on the pop because it's "bad for me". Personally I'm suffering from some medical issues, and I KNOW the first thing out of the doctor's mouth is going to be to cut back on the pop. I figure if I take care of it BEFORE I see him that I can at least tell him that I've tried losing weight, and I've quit drinking pop, and I'm STILL having the problems. Personally I love pop too! However, I also know I HATE diet pop, and I'm more likely to slip if I'm already drinking diet I'll want the regular more often.

lol Nicky! That was part of my reason for going to carbonated water to start with, because I CAN'T STAND the taste of Diet!

Talking Giving up Diet Soda

Diet does take some getting used to, but now if I drink regular by accident, I can tell right away. The regular is too sugary for me.

I was constantly told that Diet was worse than Regular because of the chemicals that were in it. It also contains Aspertame, a known weight loss staller. Not to mention caffeine which is a diuretic. Plus, the last thing I need is something else to spike my recently growing appetite. Flavored water isnt too great either, but is much better than soda.

In the end, it is your choice whether you give up soda or not. Just do what is best for you.

Yes, once you get used to diet, the regular stuff is just way too sweet. It doesn't seem to have the same 'bite' as the diet. The bubbles seem softer, if that makes any sense at all.
I think it will do me good to cut down. I am trying to not drink pop with meals. It's a really bad habit I have, and I really miss it. I don't know why I like it so much -- it just makes me burp---Gross! I think if I just reserve a soda a day, with a snack, I will be much better off. Hopefully, my water comsumption will increase, and I will drink some things that will actually benefit me nutritionally.
