Another Interesting Oprah Show--Dr. Oz

Yesterday's Oprah show was another one about weight loss, and it was very interesting. According to Dr. Oz, who Oprah has on her show a lot, we have a layer on our stomach called the omentum. A healthy omentum of a normal weight person is just a thin layer of tissue. He had examples of real omentums from cadavers. An overweight person's omentum looks like a big bunch of blubber, because fat attaches to it. He said that when we get a large waistline, a lot of it is the fat that is attaching to the omentum. There are pictures of some of the show on Oprah.com, if you want to go look at the examples.

His advice for weight loss was pretty much what I've heard elsewhere. Avoid enriched flour, sugar, white stuff. Eat whole grains and lots of fruits and vegetables. Walk every day and do aerobic exercise a few times a week and lift weights at least once a week. He's written a book, of course, but it sounds to me like just basic good nutrition, which is what I'm working toward.

He specifically mentioned steel cut oats, which is one of the foods Oprah talks about a lot, too. I just got my order of steel cut oats, 10 grain cereal, and wild rice from Bob's Red Mill, so I'm going to be jumping on the bandwagon!

One thing that was mentioned on the show that surprised me was when the doctor in the audience was talking about eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day. When he said this I thought of Missy b/c she eats the same thing in the morning and afternoon (as well as her snacks)...Girl - you know your ****!

I caught the end of the show, but they also had a special on discovery health channel with the same doctors and I watched that. I was pretty interested so I went and bought the book "you on a diet". It was very scientific, but had some very good suggestions in it. The exercise portion doesn't seem like enough for me, I already do more than whats in that program. They are really big on cutting out trans fats, saturated fats, and simple sugars. It is worth it though if your thinking about reading it.

Dr. Oz says there's an organ inside all of us that plays a key role in making us fat—the omentum. "This organ literally pumps chemicals into your body and it holds the secrets … to los[ing] weight."

The omentum is the fat organ connected to your stomach that's only purpose is to catch and store fat. When the fat is stored in your stomach, your body has easy access to it. The fat then creates an inflammatory process that irritates your arteries and puts you at risk for blocked arteries

Stepping on a scale is the primary way that people measure the success of their diet, Dr. Oz says, "because it's easy to do. But it's actually misleading in many ways."

For one thing, muscle weighs more than fat. By turning fat to muscle, you'll weigh more even though you'll be healthier. Also, weight doesn't tell you where the fat is. Fat around your legs and thighs is relatively harmless, but fat around your waist can lead to serious medical problems.

Instead of focusing on the number on the scale, Dr. Oz says to focus on the number around your waist. The ideal waistline for women is 32 and a half inches and 35 inches for a man—a goal that is achievable by everyone, no matter your age, Dr. Oz says. In the Oprah Show audience 47 percent of women and 93 percent of men were over the ideal waist size.
