Recap: Episode 9

Sorry this is up so late....I set my vcr to tape and then forgot to turn the power off so it would go into timer mode. I had to wait until the episode re-aired last night.

So last week we said goodbye to Paul from the Black team. I am hoping that he is fully recovered from his hospital stay. This week Jay is finally given his prize for winning Biggest Loser of the week. What did he win? An overnight trip for the Blue team to Vegas. Roger, Mark, and Dan are super psyched and ready to tear up the town. Bob, is skeptical and doesn't want them to go. With both teams having four players; the next weigh-in is crucial because whoever wins will have a better chance at winning the weigh-in after that and further securing their place at the campus. As Dan later points out; the guys just spent a week at home where all the old triggers were and nobody was tempted. In fact, they all had big numbers. Bob agrees to let them go, but he is still skeptical and puts them through a grueling workout before they hit the road.

Back in the gym, Jillian is focusing on Brittney who has had scattered results. She is unable to figure out why Brittney can't be more consistent. But all it is amounting to is a bitch and moan session. Jillian is yelling like a drill seargeant and Brittney is whining and stumbling on the Bosu ball. Enter the Blue team...They announce that they are going to Vegas. Bernie, Maggie, Kelly, and Brittney all put on their happy faces but it is painfully obvious that they wish they were the ones going. Jillian is also skeptical about the trip to "Sin City." While the Blue team will be surrounded by buffets, gambling, and beer; the chances that they will work out with the same intensity (or even at all) isn't looking too good. But she is also aware that Bob's team is continuing to drop big numbers and should not be forgotten. A team made up of primarily women has a much tougher task when they are going up against a team of BIG men. As far as Jillian is concerned; it will be business as usual for her team.

Dan has never been to Vegas and the rest of his teammates are more than willing to show him a good time. He also brings along a video camera to document the trip. Knowing that they are still in a competition, the first thing they do is change into their workout clothes and head over to 24 Hour Fitness. Just like their workouts at home; they step on the equipment together and finish together. Then it is off to check out their suite. In the room they find an envelope with a message from Bob. He has bought them all suits to hit the town in. I've gotta say; the guys cleaned up really nice. Just as the men are leaving there is a knock on the door. In comes room service courtesy of the Black team. Nothing like a little junk food on wheels! But the men simply wheel the food back out into the hallway and leave without even a taste. Before they go to the hotel casino; they go for a ride on the rollercoaster. Jay stays behind and watches while the other three are jerked up over 100 feet in the air and then dropped. After the thrill ride the guys go gambling until 2:30am. Mark's conscience kicks in and he and Jay head back to the room. Roger and Dan continue to play the tables and paint the town until 6am.

Mark and Jay are back in the gym at 7am and don't return until 9:30. Roger wakes up and is furious that Mark didn't wake him up to go and work out. Mark feels that Roger is an adult and should be able to wake himself up to go and workout. A heated arguement ensues and wakes Dan who is trying to get some much needed shut eye. Roger takes off alone to workout and Dan goes back to sleep. Around 11:30 he finally gets up and says that they should all go and get tattoos. It is not clear if he ever made it to the gym or not. All the guys decide to get some version of the word PRIDE. Mark covered an old tattoo and Dan got a huge angel with a guitar on his arm. Back in confessional; Maggie thought the idea of pride was stupid and Bernie thought that they might not have thought it through. Tattoos are forever and this would be a long goodbye among teammates. The tattoos seemed to restore the mood of the team as they head for home.

The Blue team joins the Black team in the livingroom and Dan re-tells (with great enthusiasm) the recap of what happened when the Temptation rolled in. It was good to see everyone in good spirits. When Bob met with his team; he could tell Mark looked upset. Mark took the high road and didn't turn in Roger and Dan for getting in late.

All 8 contestants walk out to the yard for the next challenge. It is an obstacle course. Crawling under ropes with a medicine ball, 200 lb tire rolling, and a 1/4 mile run are all part of the course. The winning team will each win 2 tickets to Puerto Rico. The only catch is that ALL teammembers must cross the finish line to win. It starts out pretty close; but eventually the Blue team pulls ahead while Kelly struggles. Blue wins the challenge and waits at the finish line while the Black members keep plugging away to complete the race. In the lead are Maggie and Brittney. Bernie hangs back to encourage Kelly who finally breaks into a run. All four teammates crossed the finish line holding hands.

Last chance workout proves to be a tough one. Brittney continues to whine and Jillian has had it. While the rest of the team are on other machines and looking on; Jillian is pushing Brittney on the treadmill. But pushing is an understatement. She jacks up the speed to 14 mph and it looked like the incline was at 0.5. Even the slightest angle can drastically increase the level of difficulty. The plan was to run at 14 mph for 15 seconds but Brittney quit with 2 seconds to go which only infuriated Jillian even more. Brittney insists she isn't scared; just tired. Eventually she makes the 15 seconds. Jillian concludes that Brittney is scared to be successful at losing weight because then she will have to be responsible. I can't remember the exact quote. In confessional; Brittney reveals that she was scared. She had never seen a treadmill move that fast before, let alone run that fast. Did Jillian's strategy work?

Here's the weigh in results:

Maggie: -8 Now weighs 190
Brittney: -6 179
Bernie: -10 201
Kelly: -6 212

Jay: -7 Now weighs 221
Dan: -7 219
Mark: -1 201
Roger: -8 268

Bernie is the Biggest Loser of the week and Dan has the highest percent of weight loss for the Blue team and can't be eliminated.

Earlier in the competition; Mark allegedly made a deal with his teammates that when he hit a wall and had no more weight to lose; he would bow out. But he started to recant and say that he still had weight to lose. Mark's goal was to lose 100 pounds and he still had more weight to lose. Roger is not convinced and becomes very agitated. He points out that Trent sacrificed himself for the team. Dan can't be eliminated, Mark won't vote for Jay and so that leaves Roger as the odd man out. Mark doesn't want to leave Jay. This was something they were supposed to do together. Roger storms out of the room. Mark breaks down in tears and Jay tells him that he will do whatever he tells him to. Mark calls a team meeting and tells everyone to vote for him. That it never should have been in question. He makes Roger promise to look after Jay. These guys really have bonded and will no doubt become lifelong brothers. Roger understood Mark's reluctance to go home because he knows the type of guy he is (a competitor.)

Dan is first to reveal his vote. He insists it isn't a revenge vote. He votes for Mark. Roger, with tears in his eyes also votes for Mark. Jay can barely speak his brother's name as he is the last to seal his fate. It's painfully ironic that he was the one to send his beloved brother packing.

Mark heads home and is happy to see his wife and kids. His wife has been encouraged to start losing weight by Mark's example. To date; Mark has now lost 90 pounds. He has 10 more to reach his 100 pound goal.

Mark may not have been anyone's favorite contestant. He was a ruthless competitor who truly "played" the game and his teammates. But just like the 4 members at the elimination table; I had tears in my eyes. Mark took the high road and left with integrity.
