Not to sound too critical, but of anyone on that season he, as a doctor, should know the most about metabolism and healthy eating and exercise. I found it really hard to like him, despite his kindness as a person, because I kept thinking he of all people should know better and what to do. Plus as a doctor he can afford to join a gym and buy healthy fresh foods. I liked him I guess, just not his situation as a doctor.
I'm glad he inspired people on TV and his patients. That makes anyone into good contestant because they are changing more than their own lives.

My husband and I like Dr Jeff a lot. I know as a dr he should know better what to do and not do and he can afford to go to a gym and buy healthy foods. But I know better what I should be doing and I know all the risks of my weight and I can afford to go to a gym and buy healthy foods, yet I am still 150 pounds overweight. maybe for him this was the little push he needed, maybe now was just the right time for him and it just happen to be on national tv. Who knows.
All I know is he seems like a wonderful man and he was an inspiration to me and especially my husband. My husband wrote him an e-mail and actually got an e-mail response. that was extra encouraging

It's really cool that he took the time to write back. He's gone from a normal person to being on TV and well-liked and I'm glad he's out there helping others.
I suppose we always blame our faults on something like not having enough money or time and he is a good example of that there are no excuses -that our weight is our responsibility. It's just frustrating because I'm in a situation as a student where it's even difficult to exercise in my living room -it's too small to even raise my leg to kick. I can't afford too many luxuries and cheap foods are fatty/bad foods.
I guess it's the same feeling when I saw this couple on Oprah that was ther e for financial counsiling because they were $175,000 in debt. But each year they earned over $100,000. That's like 10 times what I make -how come they can't live on that? The answer is the same -they suffer from poor choices and need help.
I didn't mean to imply Dr. Jeff wasn't a really nice guy. I'm glad he has inspired you and your husband. You have made a really good point that general people know better than to let themselves get too overweight too. I didn't mean to offend, just that he' a different type of contestant than I expected on the show.

Hi you didn't offend at all... I was just meaning that I don't think it matter who you are or what you do... we can all be in the same situation and sometimes it just takes a certain kick in the pants to do things... maybe without the show he woudl have never lost the weight... who knows.
He is definately a different kind of contestant than you expect to see on the show and honestly although I really liked him and was hoping he would do well... I didn't want him to win cause I was guessing he probbaly didn;t need the money.

Suzanne & Mark
I think if you are going to say that Dr Jeff should have known better, then you also have to include Suzanne and Mark (both police officers). What about Drea and Matt who were a former athlete and a personal trainer? I am sure that recurring nightmare Suzanne had about the burning building and not being able to handle stairs was scary enough to get her to realize she needed to change. Mark could barely fit into his cruiser. Service people are supposed to be in good physical condition and healthy overall. But, because of the stress levels, one way or another they are going to vent. These people all turned to food out of convienance or whatever reason. It doesnt matter who you are or what you are. As the old saying goes, "You are what you eat, from your head down to your feet." Food doesnt discrimminate, and anyone can be lured in by its charms. What should be noted, is that these people have changed their lives, and influences zillions of others as well. They have all done their duty. Also of note, these people had to cure their insides before curing their outsides. Food was never the main issue, just a symptom of a greater problem on the inside.

I didn't start regularly watching the show until midway through the second season -so honestly I had no idea what anyone else's professions were. From where I started watching everyone was making a big deal about Dr. Jeff's profession because that was also his motivation. I'm not trying to pick on Dr. Jeff -he seemed really nice and it was amazing the resolve he had. And I wouldn't have come to these boards if I didn't realize how amazing this show is.
But you've got to admit people in the health profession know more about exercise and nutrition. Just look at these boards -people not knowing ketchup has sugar, people not knowing how much/what to eat or how to exercise. I pick up an exercise book and it starts talking about glutes and triceps and stuff and they could be talking about my ears for all I know.
However, I agree that everyone is ultimately responsible for their own health and everyone can fall to the bad food habits. It's just that the path to health is less convoluded to those who have already spent the time and effort learning about the composition of the human body and the ways metabolism works. For some of us, we have a lot more learning to do before we can just go to a gym and use the weights/machines properly. For some of us, we have to spend hours looking up foods to see if they have low calories or not. Others have chosen to know these things as their careers.
True we all still have to face responsibility for our choices and put our minds in gear, but some of us don't know how to get where we want to be. This does make a difference in the process in my mind anyways. Ultimately our choices will get us there in the end, but some of us have some catching up to do on the learning curve of healthly living so we're just getting there slower.
Carrie, I think you're 100 percent right that people had to face their insides as well as their outsides. I wasn't trying to say it wasn't great that Dr. Jeff lost all that weight. I only posted this because to me it's frustrating trying to figure all this out -and not eveyone has to learn as much as some of us. I tried to give an example above with the finances -it's frustrating to see people toss away their resources and their knowledge and disregard useful information when I am spending hours reading books and reading online trying to learn what they already knew before going on that show. They needed different things -like motivation and to work through problems, but they were still ahead of the game in some ways, so to speak.
I really liked Nicky's comment "I was just meaning that I don't think it matter who you are or what you do... we can all be in the same situation and sometimes it just takes a certain kick in the pants to do things..." A kick in the pants is necessary for sure!

The last doctor that my hubby and I went to was as overweight as we are... it was difficult to hear him tell us that we had to lose weight, but he obviously wasn't practicing what he preached. We finally had to switch doctors... now we go to a doctor that is of normal weight, but doesn't get on us about our weight.... Oh well
