Tuna

I've heard several people mentioning tuna, and the interesting ways they are fixing it. I'm interested, but don't want to go back through all the posts to try and find out what you all are doing. I thought it might be a good idea to post it all right here, in one place, for easy reference.
I remember reading about some things, and that they didn't seem too complicated. So if you wouldn't mind helping out a girl who finds it difficult to imagine tuna without miracle whip, I would appreciate it!

Thanks for posting this. I read somewhere this morning about people posting tuna recipes... I went looking for some of the posts... but didn't have a lot of time at work to look for them.

I eat tuna right out of the can and in a bowl. I absolutely HATE the taste of tuna too, so all I do is mix in regular mustard with it and eat it like that...or I sometimes eat it on a sandwich with mustard. Mustard doesn't really have many cals, carbs, sugars etc in it...so it's good to mix with it.

I have shifted over to using Miracle Whip "Free!," which is the fat-free version. It actually tastes ok, but I have to be careful to use less than the regular Miracle Whip or mayo, because it's not as thick, especially once it gets mixed with other stuff. If you use too much, your tuna can be very goopy.

So here's one of my favorite lunches: A can of water packed tuna, drained; chopped apple; chopped celery; mix them all together with a tablespoon or two of "Free!" For variety, you can add nuts or dried fruit, or experiment with spices--curry is nice. It's actually quite yummy, and it looks nice on a bed of lettuce.

I also like making a salad of leftover brown rice, tuna, and whatever sorts of veggies I have around that I can chop up--carrots, peppers, broccoli, etc. Again, a bit of "Free!" and/or some fat-free Italian dressing, and you have it made.

Incidentally, one of my favorite spices to use with tuna is called "Spike." It's several dozen different herbs, spices, and dried veggies all mixed together. It's also good on popcorn!

One final thing about tuna...you can make a really big, satisfying tuna sandwich if you put in a bunch of alfalfa sprouts and some slices of tomato. Those vegetables are practically like free food because they have so few calories, and they are so good for you. I like to do this because it makes the sandwich about twice as thick, really a big handful. I also like making tuna sandwiches in whole-wheat pita bread, do you?

Sue, who loves to cook and is having fun experimenting!

Yeah, it was Phil who had some great recipie idea in someone's journal... I've been eating more Tuna lately because of it. I'm not a huge fan of plain tuna, but fixed up it is okay.
1) Mix Tuna with herbs of your choice (I use Oregano, black pepper, Cayanne pepper, and sometimes Tabasco sauce)
2) Mix with Veg of your choice (I've found corn mixes great -it totally absorbs the flavor around it and has a good texture, no chopping since it's in cans, and pretty low-cal)
3) Wrap in lettuce leaf and enjoy!

Other suggestions:
1) Buy the packages of flavored Tuna. I've tried Lemon-pepper and hickory smoked -both yum! I'm trying another flavor today too. Or just add lemon and pepper to your own Tuna
2) Phil suggested mixing Tuna with Vinegar, corn, herbs, and I think other veggies? Ah, found it:
"I mix tuna with a few veggies (carrot, kidney beans, sweetcorn, pepper) add spices (thai style usually) and a bit of vinegar, mix it all up and you have a big healthy bowl of something that actually tastes ok. I also marinade chicken in low fat yoghurt mixed with indian or thai spices and put chunks of it onto skewers to grill. Great on a bbq too." -Misfit
3) Today's lunch is Sweet N Spicy pkg of Tuna with Cilantro and black pepper on lettuce and on cucumber

Yes, I went back and found the posts. I'm really enjoying Tuna. It's easy to pack for a lunch and good without bread too.

Thanks guys! I'll check what I have in my kitchen, and see if I can come up with something good. I'm really interested to try the flavored tuna's too. We do have a couple of those pre-packaged, marinated tuna steaks, but haven't tried them yet. I think they are Chicken of the Sea ( no Jessica, it's not actually chicken) or star kist.

So glad you made this a thread of its own, it will be way easier to search for now. I hope these recipie ideas help out. I don't like the taste of Tuna itself too much, and I loved my mom's Tuna. It contained celery, apple slices, lots of mayo, celery seed, raisins... it was hard to think what I could make with it without Mayo. But, I'm really enjoying Tuna these days and it's an easy thing for me to put together for lunch. (no cooking!) Good luck and let us know what you come up with for fixing Tuna. Cheers!

I like my tuna with a tablespoon or two of sour cream in it and just a tiny bit of salt, you can use fat free sour cream of course. I also have used the garlic and herb tuna with chickpeas as a mini-salad before.
