Trans Fatty Acids Not Welcome In NY

Looks like KFC and others could be in trouble if they dont remove the trans fatty acids from their foods. Very interesting article. What was once thought to be a heart healthy alternative to lard etc.; is now much much more dangerous than originally thought.

I am conflicted about this. On my free choice side I think that a business should be allowed to cook food with what they want. However I have tried to eliminate trans fats from my diet. (I am trying to eat more natural foods and hydronated oil ain't natural) And I read "the average American eats 4.7 pounds a year". It makes me think that business may need a push. But they were pushed into using this stuff, so what do we push them to? Back to beef tallow? Lard? Coconut oil? Butter?

There are many sides to this arguement.
I agree that they should be able to put in their products whatever they wish....

HOWEVER

They need to consider that there are people out there who dont know/dont care much about trans fatty acids and the damage they do. All they care about is eating lunch. When I was on a binger; I could have cared less about all the bad crap I was ingesting. Think about McDonald's and the frivilous lawsuit brought against them by a man who claimed their food made him fat and he didnt know it would! (No comment here).

Yes they have the right to serve their famous chicken "as is" but they also have a right to provide the nutritional info for the public. I am sure it is on their website. But how many people nutrition surf before they get in the car on their lunch hour? I think what this boils down to is that the government is taking away the public's right to choose.

A while ago I found an article online about a "credit card" for school aged children. It was pre-paid by the parent. They could only purchase certain things that the parent allowed. For example; an obese child could not purchase junk food if the parent didnt allow for it. Government/schools are once again attempting to control our lives. If somebody wants to eat junk who are we to stop them?? But what we can do is alert them of the possible long term damage that it will do over a period of time. I did just read that eating just one high fat meal can do damage to your body. It's true...after being healthy for quite some time now; I can honestly say that over time you will lose your taste for fat. I had some Arby's Mozzerella Sticks the other day (way stupid I know; but I wasnt in my right mind) and I could just taste the fat they were swimming in. This time it bothered me. Forgive and forget; tomorrow is a new day. I will never do that again. But if I do; nobody has a right to stop me and nobody can stop Arby's from making them. Bottom line: Tough bill to get passed because there are so many areas to go over.

For some reading on transfats check out http://www.sustainableenterprises.co.../hydro.htm#Why be sure and check out some of the links on that site.

They are not objective but they do share my personal opinion of transfats.

KFC is taking transfat out of the fryer.

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercu...h/15885347.htm

I feel that this is an improvment but still does not make its products healty.

They were all over the radio today too. Wonder if the food's taste will be any different if they change the ingredients? Wonder if they will lose business? McDonald's was supposed to conform a few years back and never did. Either way; because of this story, KFC has gotten a lot of free publicity (both good and bad.) I have never heard the name KFC so much in my entire life. I will continue to follow this story. I am curious to see how NY reacts as well with their ban and if it will pass.

Burger King is looking to test the waters. http://www.marketwatch.com/news/stor...A8904AFC3B1%7D

At the bottom of the page it says that McDonald's Corp is looking to find a trans fat-free method for cooking.

And Wendy's is making the change. Who knows NY may not need to change the law.

As for taste I am sure that there will be a change. For the better or worse, I am not sure. I loved the old McDonald's fries, but I am sure that they were not popular with the vegetarians.

Interesting article on Burger King. If they are successful in making the change; it will put McDonalds on the hot seat. Yes they will still have their loyal "Fry guys" but it may make people think twice about what they want to eat.

This stuff will still qualify as diet-busters; but just less unhealthy than before.

I thought Wendy's already converted. I read somewhere that their fries were the "healthiest" out of all the big fast food chains.

I wouldn't mind if they banned hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup altogether. HFCS is in everything now, coke, ketchup, canned corn, mustard. What did coke and ketchup use before HFCS came out? Same with Hydrogenated Oils its all just poison.
