I was thinking last night that I ought to share with you exactly how I lost my 29lbs. I am not sure if you really want all the specifics but not to sound know-it-all it might help people new to the site.
I count calories, I calculate my allowance per day using the formula in the winning by losing book and make sure I recalculate my allowance each time I loose a few pounds. I make sure my calories vary between 200 kcals per day not exceeding the total weekly limit.
my allowance per day including a daily exercise expenditure of 400kcals= 1350kcals. Some days I have 1250 somedays 1400 ....
I spread my cals over the day,
250-300 breakfast
350-400 lunch
350-400 dinner
100-200 for 2 snacks per day.
I eat only low glycaemic load foods, I have no sugar at all!!!!!
I eat only fat free or very low fat
I make sure there is protein in all my meals and snacks
I keep a journal which I carry in my handbag and I write down every thing I eat, EVERYTHING. That way I think before I eat.
I exercise for 1 hour atleast 4 times per week, split between cardio and resistance.
I weigh once a week on the same day.
I drink lots of water.....
I rest when my body tells me I need to.
I take one day at a time, I plan my meals a day in advance .
I never think of next week or next month, just tomorrow.
I hope this helps someone
Take care

I agree that it is helpful to think of those short term goals, those longterm goals can seem so daunting! I know what my longterm goal is, but acheiving my shorterm goals is what keeps me motivated about sticking in there!

I love coming here too. Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow make this a some kind of a work out? I know laughing -- a good hearty belly laugh - is a great calorie burner! But I don't think sitting and typing on the computer is! Rats!!!
Oh well, I guess motivation, inspiration, and therapy will have to be enough!

I agree having a short term goal is better than a long term one when it comes to weight and fitness. I find it easier to work towards something this week and set a new challenge for the following week.
This forum has helped me greatly. I find much more encouragment here than any where else.

Boy oh boy oh boy oh...........
I haven't checked in here for a couple of weeks. I really haven't been doing so well. Right now I feel quite sad about some things. After not even wanting fast food for awhile now, I just got back from McDonalds a few minutes ago, where I sat in the car and ate a cheeseburger, fries and a hot fudge sundae with extra fudge. I know nothing's wrong with that once in awhile, but I can see that this is where I could totally start going backward like I have many times before (I've already "started").
I've majorly slipped on exercising, and that's what does it too for me. It's soooo hard right now though, to get myself to work out, and I was doing so well for a couple of months. Where did the motivation go?? I actually felt like I had goals and it felt great. I was very motivated to move toward my goals. Now I'm not feeling any motivation whatsoever.
I feel sad.

Hey Laurie, Nice to hear from you again!
Don't worry about a slump. Accept it for what it is -- it's temporary. I have been looking for my motivation for a long time. I haven't quite gotten it back yet. Sometimes I think I have, but it's not quite there. What I have been able to do, is not slide backwards. I'm very happy about that. I haven't done my usual 'here we go again' routine, and slipped back entirely to my crappy old eating habits. I haven't given up, and that is exactly what I always used to do.
So, don't let it get you down. Don't let it take over, and don't let it undo all your hard work. Don't give up the fight Laurie!!! You'll get your motivation back sooner or later, and you don't want to have to re-lose the weight you already have.

I hope you get out of your rut. It's so easy to fall back into all the old routines and to remember just how good all those foods were. To keep myself away from McDonald's (which I absolutely LOVE) I tell myself that there is 40g of fat in one combo...and 40g of fat is the recommended fat intake for a day! That means if you eat that combo...you shouldn't be eating anything else that has any fat in it. Not to mention..I wonder how many calories are in those meals.
It's definately hard though, which is why my trainer gave me one day a week to cheat on my diet. I love him for it. I can't wait until that day of the week where I can eat whatever I want...it's oh so good! *lol*
Cheating once in awhile is definately okay, but I hope you get back on track with your workouts
