I'm curious, what formula does she use to come up with the ratio?

I read the book also. I believe that she divides the waist measurement by the hip measurement, if I am not mistaken. That would make mine .86, but I am not sure how all that works, since both my waist and hips are big!

Jules
Jules...I know it can be frustrating to not see the results. I am very excited that I have lost 9 lbs in 3 weeks but I don't see the results when I look in the mirror or put on my clothes. I have put weight on in all areas, too...I get measured each Thursday, as well as weigh in...my measurements haven't changed at all - other than going up a tiny bit in a few areas. After reading what some of the others have said I can see their point - I'm happy that I came in here and read your journal and their responses...it has helped me out.
7lbs is great - keep up the great work.

Patty Ann -I'm so glad the direction this journal has taken has helped someone else out too. I know it's helping me -thanks everyone for the encouragement. I know I'm new and I'm posting about all sorts of things, I just have a lot of questions and a lot to learn.

I had such a bad night last night. I don't know how it happened really either. I was feeling so great after reading these forums, but when I picked my fiance up after work and he wanted to exercise again I was so discouraged. We'd already worked out that morning at 7, then I'd been at work all day until 7 pm, by the time he finishes work it's usually 11 pm. I just didn't have it in me to exercise again for another hour. I was sore and hungry and really tired and I was frustrated that he had energy and wanted to work out and I wanted to crawl in a hole (with a bucket of ice cream) and just stay there.
I can't wait until I can exercise on my own or twice a day. I can't wait until the soreness is less painful and the hunger doesn't make me angry anymore. It's so hard starting out. I appreciate how on TBL they tell people it's not easy. If it were easy none of us would be in this position would we?
I'm doing better today, we slept in a little more and exercised at 7:45 instead of 7. I'm not giving up and I'm not going to let tired/hungry me make any decisions about my life or ice cream either.

Mirror Mirror on the wall
I think I'm going to have to start treating mirrors like my scale -not checking it except once a week. Every time I walk by a mirror/window lately I look and am dissapointed that despite thinking about weight loss so much It's not just going to vanish overnight. I haven't seen myself without a blob of fat on my stomach since I was maybe 5 years old? I really really want to see myself without that.

Hi Jules,
Sounds like you are doing great! I wouldnt get discouraged with the mirror just yet. Often others will notice your weight loss before you do. Why? You see yourself everyday, but others may not. You may also be being overly critical of yourself. Give it some time. Your body is most likely doing some shifting right now. The weight didnt come on overnight, and it sure as heck wont disappear overnight either. (Too bad). Look for the smaller changes, like baggier clothes, or bone structure definition. When you least expect it, there will be a complete stranger looking back at you in the mirror.
The great thing about exercise is that it doesnt matter when you do it. The benefits are the same. 3 ten minute sessions of walking still equal 30 mins. If you arent a morning person, do it later when you are more awake. Your body wont object. In fact, it may welcome a shake up in your routine. The more you shake it up, the more you keep your body and metabolic rate on it's toes.
Thank you for all your kind words. It didnt go unnoticed. Keep up the great work!! I know you can do it. Keep us posted on your progress! And there is no such thing as asking too many questions. The only silly question is the one that isnt asked.

"Mirror, Mirror on the wall..."
Trust me, when you least expect it, you will look into that mirror and be astonished! Your body is balancing things out, and just like a kid with a growth spurt, all of a sudden you will see the changes when you least expect it.

I totally agree. We had a weight watcher leader once that always told us that your body can't lose pounds and inches at the same time. I don't know if it's true... but sometimes it did make sense. Like weeks when I would see a loss of like .2lb I would be dissapointeed by the scale, but then I would be able to put on a pair of pants I hadn't been able to wear for 2 years. And then there were weeks where I felt fat... felt like nothing fit and then I step on the scale and I lost 4 pounds.
I try to not question that anymore. I figure it took me 16 years to gain all this weight... I will just be happy to lose it in less than that
