Question Amount of time you work out...

How long do you work out? How often? What is your exercise regimen? How do you keep it fun?

I try to work out for at least an hour. And I'm finding that doing different things helps keep it more interesting. If you are a Y member, they offer a lot of free classes that are included in your membership price, utilize those. When it's nice (I live in Wisconsin) I try rollerblading with my son (try being the word, still trying to get used to those) or walking in the morning before work.

Great question...

My workout usually last about an hour. Here's what I've been doing:

Weightlifting. At my gym we have the "machine" that has 3 different stations. There are 6 different arm exercises and 1 for legs. I do two sets of 12 reps each. On arms I can only do about 20 lbs. a few of them I can do 30 lbs. Legs I do around 40 lbs. I also do an exercise with 15 lb. dumbell. Hold with both hands with arms straight over my head, bend elbows and lower weight behind my head and them back up. This is suppose to be good for the udner arm "wings". They say if you do some weights before your cardio that you'll burn fat and build more muscle.

Then I move to the treadmill. I've been doing a mile in about 20 minutes. The speed is at 3.2 and 1.5 incline. Works up a good sweat and burns about 100 calories. I'm slowly working up my speed and time. I'm hoping to get 2 miles in 30 minutes. It just takes time.

After treadmill I go to the exercise bike or the rowing machine. I'll tell you what the rowing machine really works you out!! It works your stomach, back and legs at the same time. I do about 15-20 minutes on it.

That's about it. It's not real fun but I have a friend that I work out with and we use the time to talk and have some girl time.

Currently I work out 4 times a week. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Sunday: Water Aerobics for 55 minutes. Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday: Powerflex Class for 1 hour (weight training with 4 minutes on each muscle group). If I don't do Powerflex on a particular day I might walk on my treadmill or do a Taebo dvd. I have an added plus I teach a Water Aerobics class on Mon & Wed for 45 minutes that focuses on building strength (its for individuals with MS and any other physical disabilities) so that means I actually exercise 2x on Mon & Wed. I plan to add a 5th day most likely in April when my schedule lightens up a bit. I am thinking I will do a Yoga or Pilates class then.

Wow Susie! What a workout - that is a lot of work. Do you ever feel burned out on it?

You work out quite a bit, too. So far all I am doing is walking a mile a day...I am going up a mile tomorrow. So...I will be walking 2 miles a day. As you can see I am just starting out. In another week I will be adding my elliptical workout - not sure on time since I have never done it before. I'll let ya know on that one.

HI Patty!

Yes, it is a lot of work but I've seen the results from it, 3 lb loss for every week that I've done it so far. It's well worth it. I haven't gotten burned out...yet anyways! I'll probably start changing it up some and as you know I've ordered the Biggest Loser DVD so some days instead of going to the gym I'll go home after work and do the DVD at home. Plus, this summer we'll start up water aerobics, I can't wait!!!

Good luck on your walking, 2 miles would be awesome! Just remember to walk at a pretty good pace to get your heart rate up for at least 20-30 minutes. That's when you start burning the fat. You can do it!!!!

WOW - 3lbs/week...that would be nice. Well, I started my 2 miles today - I did it early this morning @ 7:15 - very chilly, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I definitely keep up my pace - I know when I need to slow down a bit but most of the time I can keep it at a high pace. I was happy this morning - usually when I walk the muscles on my chins begin to ache really bad - well, this morning they didn't hurt at all - not even after I finished the two miles. I am just so excited about losing the weight.

Talking ankle and shin aches

After walking for about 30 minutes both my ankles and shins start burning. It is getting a little better. I try to remember to stretch prior to walking. Any advice on what causes this or what to do is greatly appreciated.

It is usually caused by walking on a hard surface such as asphalt or sidewalk. Try stretching before walking. Lean your hands against the wall and stick your foot pointed up against the wall. It helped me when I ran track in highschool (I had terrible shin splints). I also like to grab my foot behind me and pull it up towards my buttocks, it really a hamstring stretch but it feels really good on the shins and ankles.
