Question Soreness

I have been walking for my exercising - 1 mile the first week - 2 miles the second week....I am never sore after the walk. I do have burning in my shins as I am walking but I figure that is due to the asphalt and my shoes. Now my question is this - am I getting the workout that I need if I am not burning/have soreness after a workout?

Soreness is a major factor at first, but quickly your body learns what to do with the acid that is causing the soreness. Regular exercise will not produce the same soreness after a week or so.

With Cardio, you don't want to be sore afterwards. The first couple of weeks that would be normal, but if it keeps up, you should talk to a doctor.

With weight training, the burning sensation is a good sign that you are working hard, but if you stretch before and afterwards, you shouldn't be sore. You should be tired, but not sore (as you add new exercises expect some soreness for a couple of days).

If you aren't feeling the burn, you should evaluate your weight training. I'm not a trainer, but i've spent a lot of money on them in the past. You want to keep pushing your body, but you don't want to over do it. And you don't want to under do it either. IF you aren't constantly adjusting the amount of weight you do for each exercise, you won't see any physical gain, and you won't burn any more calories.

I was told that as your muscles get bigger, they burn more calories daily and while you are doing the weights, so it's a win win situation to increase your muscle mass!

The most important thing is getting your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes, that's when you start burning calories. I don't see how you would get soreness from walking.

Have you thought about getting some 2 or 3 lb hand weights to carry while you're walking? That might work out your arms while you're walking so you'll get upper body & lower body at the same time.

A little sore today..

Thanks for the information you guys. After working out to my new video I became a little sore in the calf muscles...but it isn't bad. It is nice knowing that what I am doing just might be working...ya know. That is why I wasn't sure if walking was doing the job. I know now that as long as I get my heart rate up I'm doing the job. THANKS!

Definitely, the heart rate needs to go up. But, not to high, you should be able to carry on a conversation while you are working out.
