I have to say from personal experience with my pedometer - don't trust it. At least with the one I had...I had one of the cheap ones and it doesn't read every step you take. I learned this after wearing mine most of the day and it said that I had only walked 2 miles - I knew it was wrong b/c I walked 2 miles within an hour this morning...I tossed it in the trash and was very upset.

Good question though - sorry, I couldn't help much.

ehyatt will become famous soon enough
I just bought a manual treadmill and I notice that they only good thing it keeps track of it the time elapsed! When I go walk on the track, I can usually do 2 1/2 miles in 30-35 minutes. On the treadmill it says that I have barely done a mile, and I go faster on the treadmill than I do the track. It is very frustrating.

I also know that the calories burned is not always correct, Jillian Michael's book "Winning to Lose" says that a machine cannot accurately tell each person individually how much they really burned. She said what is important was how long you worked out each day and how many calories you ate.

That is right - every person burns calories at a different pace. For instance, a 150 pound person burns differently than me @ 245 lbs. You have to be careful!

Pedometers have to be pretty expensive to be accurate, they require a lot of small parts to work correctly to accurately measure your steps.

Treadmills are just a statisical measure based on factors you give it, how fast you go, how much you weigh and your age, all of those are based on a law of averages.

Based on the book, I eat 7 caloies for every pound of body weight, and when I reach my goal weight, I will adjust that to 10 calories per pound. However, my doctor told me that my metabolism is very slow, so in reality, i don't burn as many calories as people with normal or fast metabolisms. So the stats on the treadmill aren't a good guideline for me.

I will keep counting the calories I eat, but I figure I will exercise as a bonus, and not count those calories. The scale will tell me how I'm doing!

I would trust the treadmill - my pedometer can add steps if I just shake my leg when I'm sitting down
