The Last Supper

The Last Supper
by Widdlecuddles

I know you’ve done it. Your new diet starts on Monday morning so on Sunday night you have your "last supper". Right? You know what I’m talking about.

I think in the last year my hubby and I have had a couple dozen "last suppers". Our meal of choice is usually a big grilled New York Strip Steak topped with garlic butter, a big baked potato with butter, sour cream, shredded cheese and bacon bits, corn on the cob dripping with butter and lots of salt, a soft drink (or 3) of choice and for desert we split a dozen chocolate chip cookies from Subway. I wish I was kidding... I'm not. Terrible… I know.

Last time we did this we made a decision. We decided that was the last "last supper" we were having. So now we don’t have last suppers anymore. Why? We have found that we can not decide on Friday that Monday starts the new "diet". That leads to a breakfast buffet on Saturday morning, pasta from our favorite Italian carryout place on Saturday night, lunch of greasy burgers and fries after church on Sunday… finishing off the weekend with the "Last Supper". It’s like we are trying to eat as much as we can to store up food for our long hibernation.

What changed? 1st of all we don’t think of it as a "diet" anymore. That’s a bad four letter word in our home now. Diets can be broken. This is a lifestyle change. The changes we are making in our eating choices are things we know we can live with the rest of our life.

It’s all about choices.
For example: Let's say you had a long hard day at work/school. You were so busy you skipped lunch. You are very hungry. Your significant other gets home and has apparently had the same day as you. The planned menu for tonight is grilled marinated chicken breast, baked potato, and steamed fresh vegetables. That means some prep time for the meal and it will be about an hour and 15 minutes till you eat. Or you could save that meal for tomorrow night and stop at KFC for a bucket of chicken and some mashed potatoes. You have a choice to make.

Ok now let's say you stayed out late Friday night. You were having fun and lost track of time. You made a committment to yourself to get up every day at 5:00am and exercise. The alarm goes off at 5:00am. Do you get up and exercise or do you roll over for another hour? You have a choice to make.

Everyday we have so many choices to make. Sometimes we may not make the right ones. Those are the times that you need to get up, dust yourself off and move on to the next decision to make. Don’t beat yourself up about it and make yourself feel worse. Just stick it in your memory so you can learn from it in the future, and move on.

We choose to not have "last suppers" anymore. We decided when we slip up on our "diet" (excuse me… lifestyle change) instead of saying "oh well, I blew it for today so now it’s ok that I eat (fill in the blank) and I’ll just start again Monday", we say… well we made a bad choice… let’s get back on track right now and make the next decision a good choice.

So now at this final last supper I raise my gl**** of water, with you and say "Here’s to making good choices"!

Great article Nicky!!

I have done this so many times, tell myself "Ok, this weekend I can eat whatever because Monday morning I'm going to start my "diet" again" It doesn't work that way. Like you said if you make a bad choice on your food, start over right then and there. It really is all about a lifestyle change.

I think many of us do this. The last couple of days before I started this contest for work I went all out. The last night was ridiculous.
