Discipline
Devotional Passage: Titus 2:11-15
Read the Bible Through: Genesis 23-24
Matthew 6:1-18
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.
Titus 2:12
Americans have a love-hate relationship with our weight. Some of us can't stand to be overweight, but we love eating more. One report estimates Americans spend more that $35 billion on wight-loss products; yet government statistics tell us the percentage of people who are considered obese in the United States continues to grow.
Our culture is in the paradoxical position of holding high the ideal of a slim, healthful body and yet embracing a philosophy of self-gratification that includes anything and everything one wants.
When Paul mentored Titus, he made it clear discipline is a cornerstone of Christian behavior. We are to clean up our lives, treat others justly, and work to make ourselves presentable to God.
Like weight control, godliness is not just a one-time thing, but rather a lifelong process. What we eat helps determine the shape of our bodies; but what we think and what we do determines the shape of our lives.
Lord, help me have the discipline to live soberly, righteously and with godliness.
From the winter 2007-2008 issue of "Open Windows" a publication of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Devotions for January 1-10 are by: Donald Brazile, senior pastor of Buchanan First Baptist, Texarkana, Texas.
